Thompson stands out with three awards

France-based T&T senior women’s volleyballer Channon Thompson picked up three individual awards after the Third Round of the 2018 FIVB World Championship qualification concluded at the National Cycling Centre in Couva, on Sunday night.

Thompson, who helped T&T to a seventh overall Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA) women’s title in July, was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Thompson impressed with her powerful kills and serves which earned her awards for Best Scorer with 54 points, 13 more than Mexico’s Samantha Bricio; the Best Server and the First Best Spiker.

It was great night for Thompson’s team-mates, Darlene Ramdin finished, who was the Second Best Spiker, Sinead Jack was the First Best Blocker, captain Krystle Esdelle was adjudged the Best Opposite and Libero Afesha Olton, the Best Digger of the four -team event. T&T qualified for its first ever World Championship appearance next year in Japan.

Mexican outside hitter Samantha Bricio, back after a four-year absence from national duties was recognized with the Most Valuable Player award after leading her team to a perfect 3-0 record with wins over Dominica and Costa Rica, both by 3-0 margins, before a five-set triumph over T&T in the pool decider on Sunday night.

Also from Mexico which qualified to the World Championships for an eighth time, Libero Lizeth Lopez was selected as the Best Libero and Best Receiver, and Sashiko Sanay, the Best Setter. Johanna Gamboa of Costa Rica took home the award as the Second Best Blocker.

The awards were decided according to the official VIS system of the tournament.
